  • Lecture (CES): Cuban Historian and architect will discuss Havana’s architecture and the challenges it faces, the restoration project, and the overall process of restoration.
  • Group dinner at Restaurante Fonda Paladar La Paila  (as seen on Guy Feiri’s “Cruisin’ in Cuba”–season 24, episode 17)

Friday, May 19

  • Activity: Guided tour of the Museum of the Revolution
  • Lunch at Restaurant La Farmacia
  • Lecture (CES): Historic overview of the Revolution and developments to the current day.
  • Activity: Walking tour of Vedado, University of Havana, Ice Cream at Copelia
  • Dinner: Explore old Havana or the area around the hotel

Saturday, May 20

  • Lecture/tour: The Museo de la Ruta del Esclavo and the San Severino Castle.
  • Excursion to Matanzas and Varadero
  • Group lunch in Matanzas
  • Activity: Free afternoon at the beach in Varadero
  • Dinner: Explore old Havana or the area around the hotel in small groups

Sunday, May 21

  • Lecture/Debriefing: The trip so far, experiences, questions, concerns, confusions
    •  Writer’s Journal due (returned at breakfast May 22)
  • Lunch: Explore old Havana or the area around the hotel in small groups
  • Activity: Student selected activities, work with the professors to discuss options!
  • Dinner: D’Lirios (watch out for the opera singers!)

Monday, May 22

  • Lecture: Visit to the US Embassy for briefing with [] US immigration section
  • Activity: Guided tour and explanation of the Muraleando Project
  • Lunch in Cuban sandwich shop
  • Lecture (CES): Cuba-US relations and migration
  • Dinner: Restaurant San Cristobal [Where the Obama’s ate on their recent visit to Havana]

  • Visit and guided tour of the Partagas cigar factory
  • Visit to Cuban shopping mall, Plaza Carlos III
  • Lecture (CES): A history of Cuban film
  • Visit to the Park John Lennon
  • Lunch: free time to explore the area
  • Afternoon: free time to explore the area
  • Dinner at Paladar El Canonazo
  • Activity: Visit to the Cristo statue followed by the Canon Blast Ceremony.

Thursday, May 25

  • Day-long excursion to Las Terrazas,
  • Unesco Biosphere Reserve (opportunity to swim in the river)
  • Lunch at Cafetal Buenavista at the Beunavista Coffee Plantation in Las Terrazas
  • Explore the site of the earliest coffee plantation in Cuba.
  • Dinner on your own in Havana
  • El Ballet Lizt Alfonso Dance Cuba, “Latido.” Gran Teatro De La Habana Alicia Alonso

Friday, May 26

  • Excursion: All things “Hemingway.”
  • Visit to Cojimar where Hemingway docked his boat
  • Lunch at La Terraza in Cojimar (yes, Hemingway used to eat here…)
  • Visit to Finca Vigía where Hemingway lived
  • Guide will explain sites associated with Hemingway (Such as the Bodeguita del Medio, Hotel Ambos Mundos, etc.)
  • Dinner: Farwell dinner with the SSA director, Andy and René at Restaurante Habana Blues

Saturday, May 27

  • Return to Miami. Hampton Inn, Miami Dadeland
  • Class (Hampton Inn, Miami Dadeland meeting room): updates, reflections, sign up review of blog posting schedule
    • Writer’s Journal due (returned at breakfast May 28)
  • Dinner: Explore the area (try the Dadeland Mall), & get back to American food…

  • Visit: Guided tour of the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM). View Cuban art, and general exhibits
  • Lunch: Cook out at Ada’s house in Miami Beach.
  • Free afternoon and evening: Enjoy the beach, explore South Beach

Tuesday, May 30

  • Writing Class (Hampton Inn, Miami Dadeland meeting room): creating the blog
  • Lunch Sub takeout at the hotel while you work
  • Lecture (Miami International University, Brickell Campus): Jorge Duany, Director of the Cuban Research Institute at FIU  “Cuban Americans in Miami Since the December 17, 2014 Washington-Havana Announcement”
  • Free evening and dinner

  • Writing class (Hampton Inn, Miami Dadeland meeting room): Work on the blog
  • Final Writer’s Journal due (returned in Newark)
  • Head to the airport for the return flight to Newark.
