Saturday, January 2

Arrive in Miami, Element Airport Hotel. Free time. Orientation and group dinner

Sunday, January 3

  • Morning class: the art and craft of travel writing;
  • Lunch at Restaurant Versailles;
  • Afternoon activity: History of Miami Museum and guided visit to the “Pedro Pan” exhibit.
  • Free time.

Monday, January 4

  • Flight to Cuba. Plaza Hotel, Havana.
  • Afternoon: Free time
  • Orientation and group dinner.

Tuesday, January 5

  • Morning class: Cuban author and architect from the Historian Office of Havana. Guided walking tour of Old Havana.
  • Lunch in Old Havana
  • Afternoon activity: Panoramic guided bus tour of the city of Havana: Old Havana, Centro Habana, Vedado, Plaza of the Revolution, Park John Lennon, view of the city from the Cristo statue.
  • Group dinner at a local Paladar

Wednesday, January 6

  • Morning class: Historic overview of the Revolution.  Guided visit to the Museum of the Revolution.
  • Free time for lunch
  • Afternoon activity: Cabildos Afro-Cuban King’ Day parade
  • Dinner with students from the University of Havana.

Thursday, January 7

  • Morning class: Visit the Fundación del Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano. Private screening and discussion with the producer.
  • Group lunch at a Paladar
  • Afternoon activity: Visit the Latin American and TV School in San Antonio de los Baños.
  • Dinner at the hotel

Friday, January 8

  • Morning class: Contemporary Cuban Art at the Ludwig Foundation.
  • Group lunch at Sloppy Joe’s
  • Afternoon activity: Guided visit to the Museum of Fine Arts
  • Group dinner at a local Paladar

Saturday, January 9

  • Morning class: “Hemingway” tour. Guide will explain sites associated with Hemingway (Such as the Bodeguita del Medio, Hotel Ambos Mundos, etc.)  Visit to Finca Vigía and Cojimar
  • Lunch at Muraleando community project.
  • Afternoon activity:  Muraleando community project.
  • Dinner at the hotel

Sunday, January 10

  • Morning class: Matanzas.
  • Lunch and afternoon in Varadero.
  • Free time for dinner (optional Jazz at the Hotel Nacional de Cuba)

Monday, January 11

  • Morning class: expert on US-Cuban relations (including discussion of events since December, 2014)
  • Free time for lunch
  • Free afternoon.
  • Farewell Dinner with local students.

Tuesday, January 12

  • Return to Miami. Holiday Inn, Coral Gables
  • Blog posting session (in the hotel)
  • Dinner: Group pizza while we work

Wednesday, January 13

  • Morning class: Corinna Moebius – Little Havana history and walking tour.
  • Group lunch at “El Cristo Restaurant”
  • Free afternoon in Little Havana
  • Free evening

Thursday, January 14

  • Morning class: Two lectures on Cuban Heritage
    • Mei Méndez (From the U of Miami Library and Cuban Heritage): “Miami: A Cuban American City”
    • José Smith (City Attorney, City of North Miami Beach): “Political Influence of Cuban-Americans in Southern Florida”
  • Free time for lunch on the University of Miami campus
  • Afternoon writing class/blogging at the hotel
  • Free evening and dinner

Friday, January 15

  • Morning activity: Miami’s Cuban-American Ellis Island: the Freedom Tower.
  • Free time for lunch in downtime Miami
  • Afternoon class: Jorge Duany: Director of the Cuban Research Institute at FIU  “Cuban Americans in Miami Since the December 17, 2014 Washington-Havana Announcement”
  • Free evening and dinner

Saturday, January 16

  • Morning class: Pérez Art Museum Miami  (PAMM) lecture and guided tour. View Cuban artist Carlos Alfonzo “Retrospective” and  any other part of the museum of interest.
  • Farewell Lunch at Restaurant Casa Juancho
  • Free afternoon and evening (a good day to go to South Beach maybe?)

Sunday, January 17

  • Morning class: Meetings with the professors to discuss final projects and travel journals
  • Depart from Miami

See you back at Drew. Final projects due February 1.
